Introducing the mood on a grand piano with a subtle textured soundscape, artist Tim Lea Young describes his latest release, Broad Wood as “an ode to the human feelings of warmth, compassion, sadness, love and everything in between”.
Tim Lea Young is a former synth player who was born and raised in Scotland. He is currently working out of a studio near Hove Beach on the South Coast of the U.K.
The emotive, Broad Wood was recorded on Tony Banks of Genesis’ old Steinway grand piano fused with additional instrumentation from a 100-year old upright piano, in collaboration with the Prague Strings recorded in Prague, Czech, in Feb 2020, and a feedback double bass instrument.
It is a quarter of the way through the song that the strings kick in, a luscious and textured experience that feels euphoric and cinematic. The piece build expressively and transcendally, as we experience waves of intricate finger work from Tim Lea Young and nuanced details as the song winds down poetically.
Speaking anecdotally on the trip to Prague to record with the orchestra, Tim says, “String recording included a wicked weekend trip to beautiful Prague to record the orchestra, I unfortunately, however, had an allergic reaction, because my hand went bright red and swelled up quite a bit, and my eyes were streaming the next evening when I was sat listening to the Prague Philharmonic playing Steve Reich.”
Well Tim, our eyes streamed up as we experienced the emotion conveyed in Broad Wood, so we shared your experience!
