Opening with delicate, refined piano and a vocal texture, Pem’s first release since 2019 reintroduces us to the dreamlike indie-folk artist with the lyrics “I am uneasy, but I won’t leave, don’t ask after me…”
Lullaby London feels like an ode to the city that Pem has an intimate relationship with. The sound of the song is a compliment and a juxtaposition to the frequency of the U.K. capital. The vocal textures and harmonies are exquisite.
The song is intimate yet open, Pem delivers gripping, husky vocals with a lullaby-esque tone that trembles and purrs with an Eartha Kitt-eque vibrato.
Raised in rural Hampshire now a Bristol based multi-linguist scholar and therapist in training, Pem’s literary, confessional and psychoanalytical approach makes her a natural at writing songs for the sentimental.
Lullaby London is the first single from Pem’s upcoming EP ‘Songs About Hands’. Speaking on the track, Pem says that she is “floating, sleepless and dissociated, whispering her cradle song to the city”.
‘Songs About Hands’ will be released March 2022, described as “a wistful four track therapy for the overthinkers”. Some of Pem’s influences include the Cocteau Twins, Jessica Pratt, Laura Marling and Elliot Smith.
Check out the video for Lullaby London, shot in London and directed by Las Favoritas. The choreography scenes are enchanting and the cinematography and city-like soundscaping that juxtapose the song are polished and dynamic. We can’t wait to hear and see more from Pem.
