Multi-disciplinary artist Maddie Goldberg has unveiled ‘Better If We Don’t Speak‘ – a hypnotizing sonic and visual experience created, directed and performed by the Burlington-based visionary.
Maddie grew up making short movies and music videos with her friends in her backyard, which since evolved into a love for music, video editing and animation.
‘Better If We Don’t Speak‘ marks the very first video release under her own name, Maddie Goldberg. She performed the song, built the 3D model and animated the video. Maddie says that “this is a culmination of years of hard work in the music studio and in the animation lab”. She wanted to bring together her best effort across the mediums to create something strong and emotional, and she absolutely succeeded.
Let’s start with the song. Opening with lyric “Days have gone, we decided to move on, last week”, Maddie’s vocals are clean and vibrate at a really warm frequency, comparable to icons such as Adele, super emotive with epic strings and a beautiful and cohesive build. Her lyricism tells the very relatable story of a break up and in turn, the silence that we often have to enforce for our own boundaries.
The visual art is outstanding, set in the astral realm and laced in gold (in alignment with the artist’s name, Goldberg), the video sees the construction of a virtual metallic structured body which we see is Maddie, her heart – juxtaposed in red with the self-created metallic universe.
The detail and construction is truly hypnotizing and cohesive with the energy of the song. The structures and geometry feel sacred and overall, the presentation of the project is first class. We stan.
Maddie says:
This song was written while I was living in New York, 1 week after the implosion of a toxic relationship at the height of my alcoholism. The chorus’s first line: “Are you so surprised, that I’m crazy about you?” is not a nod to the feeling of being ‘crazy in love’, but ‘crazy out of your mind’. When you’re an alcoholic, you do the irrational without blinking an eye. Recovery saved my life and my priorities. It hasn’t been linear or perfect, but it’s opened my eyes to the fact that what you want isn’t always what you need, and what you want when you’re under the influence is usually quite an illusion. This relationship ended so abruptly that it felt like divine intervention, and that spiritual power won me over in agreement: It really is better if you don’t speak when there’s nothing left to be said. In this kind of situation, the only thing that needs to happen next is the healing of your mind, body and soul.
