NOWNESS has nailed it with their latest concept. It’s a two day 90s resurgence takeover with everyone’s favourite indie-mainstream-indie icon Chloë Sevigny. From Hedi Slimane’s grunge fashion and Bernadette Corporation art to New Museum’s 1993 exhibition – Sevigny has basically created a personal mash-up of the decade including never-before-seen footage. Check it out part one ‘SURFACE’ below and read the conversation between Chloë and Interview Magazine Editor-at-Large Christopher Bollen here.
The second part ‘X GIRL’ launches tomorrow featuring Chloë and Rita Ackermann. Full film synopses under the cut.
Film 1:
Chloë reveals an unseen home movie shot by Michael Cleary and styled by Alister Mackie in his London apartment. Captured during one of Chloë’s post- Kids visits to the city, the intimate black-and-white film features the androgyne and style muse dressed in Chanel jewels and YSL’s Le Smoking. “The inspiration for the film was really Chloë herself,” recalls Mackie. “The anti-fashion aesthetic and deconstructed finishes…it was the last really revolutionary period in fashion where things actually changed.”
Film 2:
A Godard-infused vision of girl power starring Chloë and Rita Ackermann. Shot in 1995 by Junebug director Phil Morrison, the short film is a pioneering video campaign made for Kim Gordon’s cult mid-90s line, X-Girl. Featuring Chloë on a quest for a mysterious bank boy imposter and sneaking a hidden camera into a Marc Jacobs show, the video leads to star-studded cameos from the likes of Ethan Hawke, Naomi Campbell and Suzy Menkes. “I remember being concerned that plenty of people might find it boring, and Kim being very encouraging that she wouldn’t mind that at all,” explains Morrison. “That it was to some degree the idea.” Nearly 20 years later, Chloë unveiled an ode to X-Girl in her Fall 2013 presentation for Opening Ceremony, where Gordon returned the favor with a one-off performance.
