Last year, we featured Thy Veils as they took us on a celestial trip with their dimensional and ethereal single, Influx, so when we heard that the talented creators had released Upstream , we couldn’t wait to experience it!
Drawing us in with cerebral tones, almost reminiscent of a tripping into another dimension on a psychedelic journey, Thy Veils open Upstream with an enigmatic and refined soundscape of vocal textures and ethereal elements, fused with trip hop hybrid percussion.
We are immediately hypnotized as singer Alira Mun shares conscious lyricism designed to inspire us and help us connect with the universe through their elegant and magnetic approach. The soundscape is pure mastery, as expected, full of nuance and dynamics, and we are in awe of the transcendental and expansive journey that we are on.
Thy Veils tell us, “Undeniably, music is a universal language. It came into the world along with men, but it did not freeze in time. It is constantly changing. Now, we must learn its new dialects.”
The multi-platform electronica outfit, fronted by Daniel Dorobanțu, elaborate, “Back in time, in order to reproduce sounds, a laser, a magnet or a style would be needed. Today, we only need codes. With a laptop, one can replace an orchestra. The evolution of music production is arrogated to technology.”
We learn that their fusion of creativity is “innovative and primordial at the same time”, and Thy Veils as a collective “transcends the boundaries of music. This syncretic art ensemble joins composers, performers, producers, as well as designers, stylists, dancers, choreographers, poets, visual artists or tech innovators.”
The movement was founded by Romanian pioneer of ambient music, Daniel Dorobanțu in 1995. After seven studio albums and three live albums, he takes the good renown of Romanian music to the most important international artistic scenes, from New York to Tbilisi, through Vienna and Berlin. It is no surprise that his expansive approach has been recognised in this new wave of spiritual music artists.
Fans of NEO 10Y will be able to connect with Thy Veils on a spiritual level, as they have a similar message and reference the conscious universe with their art, sonically, fans of Björk and Grimes would also be able to connect, but it is evident that Thy Veils are creating a universe of their own.
Thy Veils concerts are immersive audio-visual performances, enacted by the Daniel Dorobanțu. He integrates the most diverse creative techniques: 2-D and 3-D animation, timelapse photography, cinematic and digital video, generative systems and artificial intelligence, along with the contribution of several highly appreciated Romanian visual artists.
He leaves us with the empowering quote, “There are moments in history which struck generations, which changed governments and mentalities.
